In Paris I'd
like to recommend Shakespeare and
Company (37, rue de la Bucherie) which is down
by the Seine. Expect
used books, an eccentric atmosphere bursting with fabulous, mind-expanding
"reads." Proprietor, George Whitman is straight out
of Dickens, his customers straight out of Fellini.
Also, The Abbey Bookshop
(29, rue de la Parcheminerie), the Canadian bookstore in Paris,
is not far from Shakespeare and Company. You'll find a wonderful
selection of new and used books in both French and English. Canadian
books are featured, but other countries are represented as well.
They frequently host author readings, so check their schedule.

For a wicked Sunday
brunch, try Tea and Tattered Pages,
a quirky, comfy secondhand cafe-cum-bookshop in Paris.
British expat, Kristi Chavane will heap your plate with goodies
ranging from chicken and broccoli muffins to scrambled eggs, bagels
and pancakes. P.S. She stocks over 7,000 English paperbacks and
she happily welcomes browsers. So make your choice, settle in at
the window seat and the afternoon will fly right by. Fixed menu,
and reservations a must. Call 40.65.94.35 (24, rue Mayet) Evelyn,

In Paris I recommend,
Librairie Gourmande,
4 rue Dante, 75005 Paris. Tel.: 33 (0) 1 43 54 37 27. I
visited this quaint but well-stocked culinary bookstore in Paris
in 2004 over the Bastille Day holiday. The shelves are stuffed with
cookbooks in French, English, German and a few other languages in
small quantities. Just ask the shop's enthusiastic and gastro-knowledgeable
proprietress, Amy Prevost, and she can help you in French or Anglais,
as you prefer. I purchased three colorful books- all in English-
on French bistro fare, Patisserie (pastry) desserts, and Provencal
dishes. I also brought home a cute little paperback for entertaining
for friends in French, although I didn't realize until I brought
it home - the measurements are all metric, bien sur! From their
website at www.librairie-gourmande.fr,
click on 'contactez-nous' for a map, or just ask directions from
either the St. Michel or Maubert Metro stops. Stephanie,

The San Francisco Book Co
(17 rue Monsieur le Prince) is a terrific bookstore in Paris
for used English language books. The owner, who originally lived
in San Francisco, achieved his dream to own a bookstore here in
Paris! So if, like me, you always carry a paperback book with you
when you travel, this is a great place to exchange it for another
great one while you're here.

My favorite English
Bookstore in Paris
is Galignani, “the
first English Bookshop established on the continent” according
to their card. I love their art and design books as well as their
literary collection. Address: 224, rue du Rivoli, 75001 Paris.
This is a great location near the Louvre and next to Angelina
Salon de The that serves great chocolates and afternoon tea.
