Cool New Things I Learned About San Francisco

Excellent pizza ...

Excellent pizza, San Francisco

It was Mike, a local who was raised in the Mission District who told me not to miss the pizza at Arizmendi Bakery and Pizzeria at 1286 Valencia just a few doors down from the Cut Loose Shop. He explained that only one type of pizza topping per day is offered on the bakery's trademark thin, organic sourdough crust. By the time I arrived locals were already lined up for their Slice of of the Day 'roasted potato, leek, and guyere cheese drizzled with lemon thyme oil.' Oh my goodness, it was good! Slices are $2.50 each and you can eat in at the few table available or simply take away. Arizmendi is closed on Tuesdays.

TIP: Be sure to check the baked goods display case when you come in. Besides the sourdough breads and rolls, they have other sweet goodies. I give full marks to their raspberry chocolate muffins.

Café de la Presse with a pal ...

Cafe de la Presse

Local travel journalist and photographer Lee Foster is an expert on San Francisco and Northern California. When it comes to this area I rely on him for tried and true advice. So when he suggested Café de la Presse for an early dinner I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. This is definitely a woman-friendly environment; a solo diner can sit at her own table, or at the bar to enjoy the company of the regulars. We opted for one of the tables tucked away in a corner to indulge in catch-up conversation and excellent hamburgers, frites, French onion soup and a carafe of wine. Our server was lovely; he checked in with us just often enough to see if we needed anything. It's worth noting that after 5:30pm Café de la Presse offers white-tablecloth service with a typically French menu including Escargot, Boeuf Bourguignon, Confit de Canard and a long list of wines. Journeywoman suggests you put this easy-going spot on your go-to list for lunch, dinner or any time in between. You'll definitely be comfortable here. P.S. In pleasant weather you can sit outside and watch the often eccentric San Francisco scene.

TIP: Looking for a California guidebook?

Because of his expertise and easy to read style, I'd like to recommend two of Lee Foster's travel books. The first is Northern California Travel: The Best Options available in hard copy or Kindle via This guide also includes a very helpful section on San Francisco from a local's point of view.

Then, since I love photography, the second book of Lee's I want to draw your attention to is: The Photographer's Guide to San Francisco: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them. This one can be purchased in paperback on Amazon and Kindle as well. Click here.
