Why a Membership?

Q. Why are you introducing a JourneyWoman Circle Membership?

A.  Some of you may remember that when Evelyn started the printed JourneyWoman magazine in 1994, she sold a subscription for $20 a year and had a small amount of advertising in the magazine to cover her time and the cost of production. In the late 1990s, when JourneyWoman moved to an online format, the magazine became free because it was subsidized by a small number of advertisers, mostly tour companies.

The idea of a membership actually came from you, our community, on the call when we relaunched the website in April. On that call, several women suggested we start charging a small monthly fee for our editorial, similar to many other magazines. While this idea had merit, we wanted to offer you even more value.  So, we brainstormed new services that would be helpful to you as we prepare for travel in the future.

Q. Why are you creating a membership now?

A.  We are doing this now because we know that we need to approach travel differently in the future.  Everything we know about travel has changed. We need this time to prepare., but we also need new tools to help us. All of the services we’ve designed as part of this membership are intended to help you plan, prepare and stay safe when you travel in the future – when it’s safe and you feel ready.

Q. Will JourneyWoman still have advertising on the website?

A. Yes, selectively. As you may have noticed, we put a hold on all advertising in March due to COVID. It just didn’t feel like the right time to be promoting travel, when things were so uncertain. Even now, we are being careful and respectful of those who are affected by the pandemic and advising most of our partners to wait until the fall to start advertising again.

Our Women’s Travel Directory is an important part of our website, as it profiles women-owned businesses that cater specifically to women’s needs. You might be surprised to know that we turn down hundreds of inquiries for paid advertising every month, including blog posts, banner ads and many other requests from marketing agencies who know how trusted JourneyWoman is.  It’s important to us that we only advocate for products and services that have been tried and tested by JourneyWomen.  We are working with our tour companies and other advertising partners now to innovate new partnership models that will bring value to our community.

Q. Will I still get emails, including the monthly magazine, for free?

A .  Yes. The magazine will continue to free, but within it, there will be special links to member-exclusive content, events, deals and discounts for JW Circle Members only.

Q. What will happen with the website? Will I be able to access all the sections, or do I have to be a Member?

A.  Most of the website will continue to be accessible by everyone, but some areas will be available only to members. These areas will have member-only content, including special editorial features, deals and discounts, member-only webinars and the Community Directory and Forum. We have invested significantly in new technology to allow members to connect in secure forums, share information privately, and to support mentoring in the future.

What’s included in the Membership? 

  Q. Will webinars, book clubs and events be included in the membership?

A. Great question, and it’s a YES!

Community Circles will remain free (and we are in the process of expanding these to other timezones right now).

The Book Club will remain free. If you’d like to show your support, you can contribute by buying us a coffee through a ‘pay what you can program’ (eg. a small donation of an amount of your choice). which helps us cover the cost of planning, promotion and Zoom.  You can connect to that here.

We are arranging special webinars with experts that will be included in the membership.  Non-members will have access to most events although there will be a small charge (eg $10USD).

We are exploring strategic partnerships with third-party organizations who may charge a fee for their webinars; in which case members will receive a discount and non-members will pay a higher price.  More on this soon.

Q. Will I still have access to hot deals from tour operators?

A. Yes, those will remain in the magazine and on the website with free access. However, Circle Members will receive additional value-added features and benefits if they book a trip with the operators listed on our website. (Reminder that JourneyWoman does not receive commission from trips booked.)

Q. Do I have to be a member to participate in the Community Circle?

A. The Community Circle Calls will be available to everyone at no cost.  We do ask that you support us in other voluntary ways, as mentioned above, to cover the cost of our paid Zoom accounts and other security features. We’ll do our best to be clear about this so you can make informed decisions.

Q. What new services will you be developing and when?

A. We are launching several new services this year, including a private member directory, and hope to add online mentoring and forums where we openly share information. We also want to offer you opportunities to evaluate products and services and share feedback in a private forum. The timing of these will depend on a few things: When we are likely to travel safely again, the cost of building new services, and ensuring that we have enough interested women to justify the expense.

Q. How do I access the new JW Women’s Advisory Council?

A. We’re very excited about our new Advisory Council! This is a group of 13 generous, well-travelled women who are passionate about sharing their expertise with you.  Access to the Council will be a key feature of our membership, including special workshops, webinars and editorial.  The Council will also participate in a number of activities, both free and member-only. Please check specific events for details.

Subscription & Fees

Q.  Is there a discount if I decide to join on an annual basis?

A. Yes.  We value your trust in us, and if you decide to purchase an annual membership, we’ll show that to you by offering a month for free AND we’ll send you a surprise in the mail! 

We know that budgets are tight for everyone. If you decide to subscribe on a monthly basis ($10USD – roughly two cappuccinos!) you can cancel at any time. Please note, however, that as we add new services our monthly fees may increase. 

Q. Why do you need my address?

A. Your address is required by the payment companies (PayPal or Stripe) to validate your billing details. We do not keep your financial information on our website.

We’d like to give everyone who joins the Circle for a YEAR a FREE JourneyWoman iconic luggage tag, which we need to mail to you! These will also be sold separately on our Store when we launch it later this year.  

Q. Why is there a processing fee? 

A. This is a fee charged by PayPal or Stripe to process the order.

Q. Can I gift a membership to someone else?

A. Yes! What a lovely idea, especially for a woman new to travel! You will see an option to select to purchase the subscription as a gift on the product page, as well as on the cart page.

Q. If I join now, is it refundable? How do I cancel?

A.  For monthly subcribers, you will be billed each month via your payment service.

For annual subscribers, there is no refund.

To cancel, log into your account and view your subscriptions. Here, you will be given the opportunity to cancel and, should you have a change of heart, reactivate your account.

Please note: Cancelling your subscription does not delete your JourneyWoman account, nor does it remove any personal information you have saved. To delete your account, please find the “Delete Account” option in the left-hand menu of your account and follow the prompts provided.

Q. Does it renew or do I need to subscribe each year?

A. Our subscriptions are set to renew automatically, but you can change this in your account by editing subscription preferences.

Our Commitment to Privacy

Q. What do you do with my personal information, such as name, email and address?

A.  We do not share or sell your personal information to anyone. Period.

Q. Why do you need me to agree to your Privacy Policy and Terms of Use for the website?

You can read our Terms of Use HERE.  This is important because in becoming a JourneyWoman Circle member, you will have access to certain sections of our website, such as our Member Directory, and will be able to post comments and share information within a private forum.  We want to ensure that all dialogue on our site is respectful, constructive and helpful to other women.

Q. How are you protecting our privacy?

A .  Like many of you, we have concerns about privacy and information sharing on public social platforms. Even though we are active on social media, we do not OWN our own information when it is produced on platforms like Facebook. Our intention is to create a protected space where you can interact with each other in confidence, knowing that we are NOT tracking or selling your private information.  Our only interest is your safety and well-being. Q. Do you keep or store my credit card information on the site?

A. NO. JourneyWoman does not store or keep your financial information; it is being used by PayPal and Stripe, which are both reputable third-party credit card processing platforms. We have included links to their privacy policies that you can read when you enter your credit card information. 

Q. What technology have  you put in place to ensure privacy and security?

A. The JourneyWoman site follows industry best practices for security. Our site is hosted on WPEngine, an enterprise-level WordPress host that is committed to site security. (WPEngine is a leading WordPress hosting company used by over500,000 websites). As part of our hosting plan they provide:

  • A secured environment with disk write limitations and protection
  • Scans and automatic disabling for plugins with security flaws (a plugin is a software component that adds a specific feature to an existing computer program. An example of this is our calendar).
  • A proprietary firewall that monitors for incoming threats
  • A segregated environment that isolates our customers data and protects it against unauthorized access
  • Bundled SSL certificates on all plans (SSL is Secure Sockets Layer and, in short, it’s the standard technology for keeping an internet connection secure and safeguarding any sensitive data that is being sent between two systems, preventing criminals from reading and modifying any information transferred, including potential personal details)
  • Automatic updates of core software
  • Automatic updates of plugins
  • Daily backups

In addition, we have MalCare security performing daily virus and malware scans and have enforced secure passwords for administrative accounts.

Account & Profile Troubleshooting

Q. I registered for the JW Circle Membership, but haven’t received an email containing my username and password. What should I do?

A.  If you have received an email receipt confirming your subscription but no email with your username and password, please contact us and we will be sure to get that information to you.

Q. My password isn’t working. How can I access my membership?

A. You can reset your password by either clicking on this link or by contacting us and requesting that we reset it for you. We will then email your password to you. Please note that the JourneyWoman support team will not ask for personal information and all emails from our support team will come from addresses. Please do not provided personal or sensitive information to anyone requesting it unless you have been in contact with a support staff member.

Q. I forgot my password. How can I log in to the site?

A. You can reset your password by either clicking on this link or by contacting us and requesting that we reset it for you. We will then email your password to you. Please note that the JourneyWoman support team will not ask for personal information and all emails from our support team will come from addresses. Please do not provided personal or sensitive information to anyone requesting it unless you have been in contact with a support staff member.

Q. How do I edit my profile?

A. With just a few easy steps, you can populate your Profile and make it easy for other members to connect with you:

1. Click the Gear Icon () located at the bottom right of your cover image and select “Edit Profile.”

2. You will be taken to a new screen where you can upload a profile photo and a cover photo

3. Answer some fun questions that will make it easier for other JW Circle Members to learn about you!

4. Make sure to click the “UPDATE PROFILE” button at the bottom to save your work.

Q. How do I edit my account information?

A. On the Account page, you can change or update the information we have for you on file.

Select a tab from the left-hand menu to make edits to billing and shipping addresses, view your orders, manage subscriptions, or change privacy and notification settings.

Please note: You cannot change your username, but all other info can be updated here.

Q. Can I change from a monthly to annual subscription after I’ve made my purchase?

A. Yes, you’ll just need to wait a month, and then start again with a new annual subscription. 

Q. How do I cancel my subscription?

A. Although we hope to provide the kind of informative and useful information that our community finds invaluable, we understand that there may come a time when you wish to suspend or cancel your subscription.

Visit you Account, and select the Subscriptions tab from the left-hand menu. Here you can view your subscription and upcoming renewals. Select the button that says “View”, and then the option to “Cancel”. 

You have the option to reactivate from this section as well.

Please note: Cancelling your subscription will not delete your JourneyWoman account, you will simply lose access to members-only content and discounts. If you wish to delete your account and the information stored therein, please select the “Delete Account” option from the left-hand menu and follow the prompts on the page.
