As women prioritize wellness, river cruise lines are meeting this shift head-on

by Ming Tappin

As our society increasingly embraces healthier, more balanced lifestyles at home, this approach has also become a priority for women over 50 while on vacation, influencing their planning decisions. River cruise lines are responding to this demand with experiences that support personal wellness through mindful dining, opportunities to stay active, and spaces dedicated to rest and restoration.

Many river ships are equipped with fitness centres, plunge pools or hot tubs, along with massage and salon services. Daily fitness classes, such as stretches and yoga, kick-start the day, while the top decks provide the perfect space to walk laps amid the passing scenery. Women can also stay active ashore by participating in walking, biking, and hiking tours, and – depending on the itinerary, kayaking or canoeing adventures.

Culinary offerings on the river cater to a wide range of dietary preferences. Vegetarian and vegan options are standard on menus, and with advance notice, meals can be tailored for health-conscious diets. Buffets often feature green smoothies and healthy bowls, while bars serve non-alcoholic beer and wine, as well as a variety of refreshing mocktails.

Seven river cruise companies embracing wellness

Here is a closer look at how some of the leading river cruise lines incorporate their unique wellness approach throughout the journey.

1. AmaWaterways: Wellness is woven into the cruise experience

Wellness is not just a buzzword on AmaWaterways; it has been woven into their entire cruise experience. Each ship carries a certified Wellness Host who leads a diverse range of fitness classes several times a day. During our Colors of Provence cruise, we were delighted to see classes beyond stretches and yoga, such as resistance-band workouts, high-intensity intervals, circuit training, and core strengthening. The Wellness Host also escorts active excursions ashore.

Onboard, ships feature fitness centres, pools or hot tubs, massage treatments, complimentary bicycles, and walking tracks on the sun deck. AmaMagna, the line’s flagship on the Danube, even has a pickleball court – the first for river cruising. Menus incorporate fresh regional ingredients, and vegetarian options are available daily.

Ama also offers an annual Melodies of the Danube – Celebration of Wellness itinerary, which travels with two dedicated Wellness Hosts who conduct mindful activities designed to move, connect, and recharge. Ama also offers the Concierge Golf Program on select Seine and Danube sailings, where guests can golf at championship courses with the support of a dedicated guide.

2. Avalon Waterways: Active & Discovery themed cruises

Avalon Waterways is another leader in wellness on the river. Ships are equipped with fitness centres with cardio and weight training equipment, and each sailing includes an Adventure Host who leads daily fitness classes. Hiking and biking tours are available, but guests who wish to explore independently can also work with the Adventure Host to curate customized routes complete with maps, complimentary FitBit trackers, Nordic walking sticks, and bicycles.

Avalon also schedules Active & Discovery theme cruises on the European rivers, where walking, hiking, and biking excursions at varying activity levels are included every day. On the Danube, guests can hike to Count Dracula’s prison tower in Visegrád, paddle a canoe through the picturesque Danube Bend, or pedal along the vineyards and orchards of the Wachau Valley. On the Rhine, they can kayak Amsterdam’s canals, or take an exhilarating hike along Heidelberg’s Philosophers’ Way.

Health and wellness also extend to the Avalon Fresh culinary program, created in partnership with Karl and Leo Wrenkh, Austrian restaurateurs and founders of a culinary school. The menus focus on regional cuisine as well as lighter, healthier options. Avalon has also partnered with beWell to provide vitamin-infused water stations in the Club Lounge, with tasty flavours such as Green Hope, Herb Happinez, and Pink Positive.

3. Emerald Cruises & Tours: Vegan and gluten-free meals

Emerald ships offer the core health and wellness elements travellers are looking for on the rivers. Ships have fitness centres, small pools, and massage services. On our Enchantment of Eastern Europe sailing from Bucharest to Budapest – a port-intensive itinerary – fitness classes were offered in the morning on select days. Ashore, we participated in EmeraldACTIVE excursions that included hiking to the rock-hewn monasteries in Rousse and the Belogradchik Fortress in the Balkan Mountains, and e-biking in Belgrade. Emerald’s menus feature vegetarian and vegan options, as well as gluten-free meals.

4. Riverside Luxury Cruises: Spa offerings and indoor pools

As its name suggests, Riverside is all about luxury, all-inclusive comfort. Its parent company, Seaside Collection, is known for boutique hotels and exceptional culinary experiences, and that expertise carries over seamlessly to the river. Riverside’s wellness journey begins onboard all-suite ships with butler service and a crew devoted to pampering guests. Every vessel features a spa offering massages and facials with Natura Bissé products, fitness centres with Technogym equipment, and indoor pools. The line’s flagship – Riverside Mozart – goes even further with men’s and women’s saunas and steam rooms, a hot tub, a counter-current pool for swimming laps, a wraparound mid-ship promenade, and a full-service salon.

Riverside offers walking, hiking, and biking excursions ashore and carries bicycles for guests to use in port. On our Rhône River cruise onboard Riverside Ravel, we pedalled nearly 50 kilometres on e-bikes from Viviers to meet the ship at the next destination, a perfect example of how guests have the option to tackle as much or as little as they like. Walking enthusiasts also have complimentary use of LEKI walking sticks to explore at their own pace.

Riverside’s culinary excellence reflects Seaside Collection’s roots, with delectable meals prepared from scratch onboard, including breads and jams. Menus offer daily vegetarian and vegan options, and dishes can be customized to meet specific dietary needs, ensuring every guest dines with wellness in mind.

5. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours: All-inclusive luxury

Scenic delivers an all-inclusive luxury experience, with all meals, premium beverages, and gratuities covered in the fare. While facilities vary by ship, the Scenic fleet is designed with wellness in mind. One standout feature is the Salt Therapy Lounge, found onboard 10 vessels in Europe. These humidity- and temperature-controlled rooms, lined with salt-brick walls, offer a calming space where guests can enjoy the restorative atmosphere.

Across the fleet, ships also feature fitness centres, complimentary e-bikes, morning stretch classes, spa treatments, a Wellness Coach, and active shore excursions. Healthy eating is also part of Scenic’s experience, with menus that include lighter, wholesome options alongside indulgent choices.

During the Treasures of the Mekong itinerary, guests can start each day with a workout in the on-board gym, an early morning yoga class or some relaxation in the sauna before heading out to explore Siem Reap down to Ho Chi Minh City.

6. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises: Let’s Go Cycling Excursions

Another brand in the luxury river space, Uniworld pairs its all-inclusive fares with a deep commitment to health and wellness. The line’s wellness experts – many with an average tenure of a decade – lead a range of classes such as sunrise yoga and TRX® Suspension Training. Guests can also use the 24-hour fitness center, take a swim in the pool, or indulge in treatments at the Serenity River Spa.

Active exploration is a big part of Uniworld’s onshore experience. The Let’s Go cycling excursions follow scenic paths along the river, while guided hikes lead to castles, vineyards, and panoramic viewpoints. Walking tours are available on every voyage, and kayaking and even golfing tours are offered on select itineraries. Guests can borrow bicycles and Nordic walking sticks for self-guided adventures ashore.

Complementing a traditional menu that highlights local cuisine and international fare, the Travelling Lite menu features healthy options with lower-calorie dishes. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available.

7. Viking: DIY Wellness

Compared to the other river lines, Viking offers a more pared-down approach to wellness onboard. Viking’s ships do not have fitness centres, spa facilities, or bicycles, though guided biking excursions are available at select ports. However, menus include vegetarian selections, and the culinary team can prepare lighter meals tailored for low-calorie, sodium, or cholesterol preferences. While guests can still maintain a healthy lifestyle on a Viking cruise by eating well and staying active ashore, those seeking more extensive wellness facilities or daily fitness programming may prefer another line.

“For many of my clients, activities like hiking, biking, and yoga make it easy to connect with other guests, often leading to friendships that continue beyond the cruise. The opportunity to eat healthy and stay active while travelling makes wellness-focused river cruises especially appealing, particularly for women 50+ travelling solo who appreciate a safe, relaxed, and informal environment. It’s wonderful to see so many cruise lines expanding their fitness and wellness programs to address this increasing interest.” — Trish York, owner at Trish York Travel
