Intrepid prioritizes regions where tourism promotes gender equality
By JourneyWoman staff
As more women seek travel experiences that offer deeper connection, community and cultural immersion, Intrepid Travel has expanded its women’s expeditions to three new countries, including Peru, Cambodia and Bhutan. With these new additions, Intrepid’s Women’s Expedition range now spans eight adventures globally, including India, Morocco, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Each itinerary is from 8-11 days and is intentionally designed to support women in tourism in countries where gender barriers still exist and they’re not always afforded the same opportunities as men.
“We’re prioritizing destinations where tourism can deliver meaningful positive impact, while offering unique, women-led experiences for our travellers,” says Erika Kritikides, General Manager of Experiences at Intrepid Travel. “When women are empowered, it creates a ripple effect within the community. These trips support women tourism entrepreneurs and help break down gender barriers in the industry – and as women step forward, they’re holding the door open for others to follow. We remain committed to working closely with our local teams to support these women and advance gender equality in tourism.”
Women now make up over half of Intrepid travellers and the Women’s Expedition range grew by 32% in 2025, with 77% of travellers joining solo. Designed specifically for women, the new trips create space for connection, spark meaningful discussion and offer travellers rare insight into the lives of local women through immersive experiences. These latest trips will directly develop 12 women-led experiences and support eight new women-owned businesses.
“Intrepid has long been a leader in all-women adventure travel before it became trendy, launching its women’s expeditions in 2018 as part of a larger effort to accelerate gender equity,” says Carolyn Ray, CEO, JourneyWoman. “I appreciate that they have made these trips affordable for solo women travellers, some starting as low as US$1200, with a very low single supplement. I’m looking forward to witnessing the impact on women and communities first hand on my first Intrepid Women’s Expedition to Morocco in March 2026.” (Learn more about the Morocco Women’s Expedition here).

About the JourneyWoman Women’s Travel Directory
JourneyWoman, the world’s first resource for solo women travellers established in 1994, hosts the JourneyWoman Women’s Travel Directory as a free service to help women plan safe, women-friendly solo travel, while supporting women-owned and small tourism businesses around the world. The Directory includes hundreds of curated and vetted multi-day tours, retreats, small ships and train experiences, as well as a concierge service to connect women with travel advisors, coaches and guides. Featured categories include adventure travel, wellness, hiking and walking, special interest trips, as well as accessible, LGBTQ+ and Indigenous tours. Within the Directory, there is a ‘Places to Stay’ resource where women can find and share safe, affordable, women-friendly hotels, hostels and other accommodation options. JourneyWoman vets each business and provides a “JourneyWoman Verified” badge to those that meet certain criteria.
