Career opportunities at JourneyWoman

Established in 1994, JourneyWoman ranks in the top 15 travel websites in the world. Together with our readers, partners and community, we are building the largest and most influential women’s travel business in the world, focused on the often undervalued women over 50 market. We publish several newsletters a month, host the world’s only Women’s Travel Directory, and create marketing programs to promote solo travel, women-friendly tours, retreats, small ships, trains and safe places to stay.

Behind the scenes, our small team of professionals puts our passion for travel into everything we do. We all work remotely and travel frequently, but find time to come together several times a year to brainstorm, share ideas and personal goals, and plan ahead. We work lean and quickly, and are always ready to innovate. There is also the opportunity to travel, or help us test out new affiliate partners.

Our CEO and Editor, Carolyn Ray, was named one of the most influential women in travel in 2023 by TravelPulse. Prior to this, Carolyn was the CEO of Interbrand Canada, where she led a team of 30 professionals and built a fun, highly engaged culture. Our professional travel writers are members of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), The Travel Media Association of Canada (TMAC) and the Transformational Travel Council.  In July 2024, we received the TBEX Travel Blog of the Year Award.

To apply for roles, please email Carolyn Ray at [email protected]. Please include a cover note highlighting which role you are interested in, your relevant work experience, aspirations, why you’d like to be a part of our team, and fee expectations. Please sign up for our newsletters, look at our website and come prepared with your own ideas. Please do not email multiple times as we are busy and get hundreds of emails a day. We do not want proposals from agencies, thank you for respecting that.

Once we have shortlisted candidates, we will contact you, arrange a 15-minute zoom interview and discuss the opportunity. Depending on the role, we may invite you to meet other team members, as we believe cultural fit is very important. Our entire team is virtual but we try to meet in person regularly throughout the year.

Strategic Partnerships Manager – Contract (Target date: April 2025)

We are seeking an ambitious, creative person to support our growth, with a focus on our Women’s Travel Directory (WTD). Our Directory connects women who love to travel with hundreds of women-friendly tours, accommodations, retreats and small ship experiences around the world. This is part of our vision to encourage women to intentionally support women-led businesses as we recover from the pandemic. In January 2025, we announced a new Solo Travel Concierge Service that integrates travel advisors, guides, coaches and custom trips into our network.

Our Women’s Travel Directory is the only resource of its kind in the world. We are strictly marketing partners, we do not book or sell tours or retreats. Rather, we want to create a resource where we can both support small businesses and help women discover safe, vetted women-friendly travel experiences.

This is a unique role that probably doesn’t exist elsewhere. It combines several capabilities, the foundation of which is responsiveness and an entrepreneurial mindset: relationship building, marketing and an understanding of business challenges in the travel industry. In this role, you’ll work with small businesses around the world that have been severely impacted by the pandemic. You’ll seek opportunities to help them build awareness of their businesses and be their marketing partner, seeking innovative ways to differentiate their business and help them grow after some very challenging years.

As part of the JourneyWoman team, you’ll need to have:

  • Strong knowledge of the travel industry
  • Experience marketing tours, retreats, etc. is incredibly valued
  • Excellent communication skills (accuracy is critical in our profession)
  • Experience writing marketing plans and proposals

Key responsibilities:

  • Help develop a growth strategy and marketing plan for JourneyWoman’s Women’s Travel Directory
  • Proactively develop relationships with new partners
  • Build and execute marketing plans to support key partners
  • Monitor tour operator and retreat reviews to ensure feedback is shared with our clients
  • Seek out new advertising partners through associations and other networks
  • Suggest editorial ideas on women’s travel trends and topics based on conversations with clients

Our ideal candidate is:

  • Passionate about travel and women’s empowerment
  • Responsive and entrepreneurial, can work without too much direction
  • Has a strong interest working in women’s travel
  • Is familiar with email marketing techniques and measurement
  • A self-starter with exceptional organizational, verbal and written communication skills

We’re open to a flat monthly fee or commission based on sales, but there. Like other roles on our team, this requires someone with an entrepreneurial mindset who is proactive, feels empowered to make decisions and executes quickly and well with minimal supervision. Travel is also an opportunity.

Social Media Coordinator  -Under review – Part-time

Our latest survey results show that women 50+ are not making travel decisions based on social media, which ranked 10th as a trusted source of information, just behind mainstream media. While we think there is value in some social media for the JourneyWoman brand, we are evaluating the role of social media in our business overall, and whether it is worth the investment. Currently we are on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. While we had over 45,000 followers on Twitter, we left that platform over a year ago. We use YouTube as a repository for our calls and webinars but don’t have a marketing strategy in place.

The Social Media Coordinator will work closely with our Marketing Manager to create social media campaigns to build our brand and support our programs and editorial. This person is passionate and self-directed, with at least two years of experience. Compensation is hourly or flat rate per month depending on activity level.

Key responsibilities:

  • Create social media strategies to promote our content to current and prospective readers in innovative and engaging ways
  • Assist in the ideation of implementing plans to increase followers on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram (and potentially other platforms)
  • Help us attract new subscribers to our newsletter
  • Implement SEO strategies to drive traffic to the website
  • Continually measure and report on social media effectiveness and optimize campaigns using analytics
  • Research and post relevant third-party content

The ideal candidate:

  • No agencies please – freelancers only
  • Working knowledge of Canva, Buffer, Google Analytics, ConvertKit
  • Experience managing social media or digital marketing projects (applicable coursework acceptable)
  • Passionate about travel and women’s empowerment
  • Have strong interest working in a digital publishing and production environment
  • Be familiar with digital publishing platforms
